A visual pattern is a sequence of shapes, pictures, or geometric objects that follow a defined rule or repeat in a predictable way. Patterns can be repeating, where a unit of shapes, colors, or images is repeated in a variety of ways, like AB, AB, AB pattern or ABC, ABC, ABC pattern. Patterns can also be progressive or growing, where the rule changes as the pattern progresses such as A, AB, ABC, ABCD. Conversely, a pattern could have a decreasing or shrinking focus like CBA, BA, A.
Visual patterns used in math help students develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and build foundational skills like problem-solving, reasoning, and algebraic thinking. They provide a visual representation of abstract ideas, making it easier for students to grasp relationships and predict future outcomes.

Great News! We’ve done the hard work for you! We have created a colorfully engaging and mathematically rich Visual Patterns Bundle with over 50 UNIQUE Visual Patterns, an answer key (last 2 google slides in Visual Patterns slide deck), and access to 5 videos to aid in supporting the facilitation of Visual Patterns. This bundle is perfect to use for students of ALL AGES for a whole year. This bundle is great for teachers, homeschool parents, math coaches, administrators, and student teachers. The Visual Patterns are shared via google docs and can be displayed in power point format on an interactive whiteboard. Additionally, the Visual Patterns can be printed on paper and displayed or shown on a laptop.

This introductory video will demonstrate how to facilitate a visual pattern routine with mathematicians of all ages. Visual pattern routines are an engaging and fun way to start math class which should only take about 10 minutes. They encourage students to reason algebraically and use problem solving and critical thinking skills. Most importantly though, visual patterns are accessible for all students and are a lot of fun.
